An Introduction to Beekeeping Course Run By Beekeeping Academy Ltd


The course will be held on the 22nd February 2020. We will meet at the Biorenewables Development Centre in Dunnington, York (see below for further details) at 9am for Introductions and refreshments and we will start promptly at 9:30.
The course runs from 9:00am to 15:00 with a 30 minute lunch break (Lunch provided).
There will be Teas & Coffee supplied throughout the course.

The class will be divided into four sections:
Morning Session 1 Briefly covers the benefits and enjoyable factors in keeping bees and then move into a brief history of beekeeping.
Break For Teas & coffee
Morning Session 2 will cover the biology of the bee and the different casts associated to the honey bee family; understanding the workings of the colony is key to knowing what is normal when examining a hive.

Afternoon Session 3 we will look at the different Hive types and the advantages and disadvantages of each, how to handle the equipment. We will also talk about the costs associated with starting up beekeeping and how to source and site your bees when you get them.  The second half of the session will emphasise how to determine the ‘health’ status of the
colony, how to carry out an inspection and what a good brood pattern looks like. We will also cover management of diseases and pests of honeybees
Afternoon Session 4  we will provide a tour of the Abelo beekeeping facility and there will be an opportunity for a Q&A session.

The course will be held at the Biorenewables Development Centre,  1 Hassacarr Close, Chessingham Park, Dunnington, York, YO19 5SN. We will then walk to Abelo’s shop from the Development Centre for the final session.
